Why can't you square both sides of an equation? I've been asked this many times and can never quite give a good, clear, concise answer (for beginning algebra students) in plain language. I just searched the web and still couldn't find a simple-to-understand answer for why squaring both sides gives you extraneous solutions.

When you first start solving algebraic equations, you're given relatively easy examples like x = 5 + 4 or y = 5(2 + 1). But as time creeps on you'll be faced with harder problems that have variables on both sides of the equation; for example, 3_x_ = x + 4 or even the scary-looking y2 = 9 - 3_y_2.
Step 3: Solve for the variable Use opposite operations to cancel numbers Example Problem: Ex 1 Ex 4 Ex 3 Ex 2 Types of Solutions ONE Solution NO Solution MANY Solutions There is only one answer that makes the equation true (EX: x=3 This is the answer) There is no number that will satisfies both sides of the equation. Variables will cancel and a ...

Solve equations by clearing the Denominators. Find the least common denominator of all the fractions in the equation. Multiply both sides of the equation by that LCD. This clears the fractions. Isolate the variable terms on one side, and the constant terms on the other side. Simplify both sides.

Dec 30, 2020 · Because we want to solve for time (t), we need to use the equation that you rearranged in the second part of question 1: Because you've got an equation that allows you to solve for t (without rearranging), you can simply plug in the numbers (v = 0.032 km/day from the above problem, and d = 2.6 km) and do the math.

To combine them is pretty easy, you just add them together and make sure that they are all on the same side of the equation. First, we will combine all like terms on each side of the equation: Since the 15 and 10 are both constants we combine them to get 25. The 4x and -3x each have the same variable (x), so we can add them to get 1x.

  • Consider the equation of a line, 3x − 2 = 4. We will perform mathematical operations on the LHS and the RHS so that the balance is not disturbed. Let's add 2 on both sides to reduce the LHS to 3x. This will not disturb the balance. The new LHS is 3x − 2 + 2 = 3x and the new RHS is 4 + 2 = 6.

Sometimes, the unknown quantity will appear on both sides of an equation. This is where the properties learned in 5.1 and 5.2 come in handy.
