You do need a slip yoke in a passenger car just like any other transmission. Due to suspension movement, there has to be a slip joint somewhere. Only vehicles with a two-piece shaft with center support have a bolt in, like the truck/van that the 4L80E likely came out of. On those, the slip joint is at the connection between the two shafts.
